Goli Shifteh, BA
Registered Professional Counsellor |
|
Goli Shifteh is a Registered Professional Counsellor (RPC) and member of the Canadian Professional Counsellors Association (CPCA). She holds a certificate in Counselling with a cross-cultural focus; and she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, emphasizing coursework in psychology and group process. She has been a counsellor at the Vancouver Association for the Survivors of Torture (VAST) since 2005. Goli adopts a humanistic orientation in her practice, using client-centered LifeSpan Integration (LI) and cross-cultural approaches, depending on the specific healing needs and cultural heritages of her clients. Working with immigrant populations from many countries and ethnicities, Goli has gained expertise in cultural displacement and domestic violence issues; she has counselled persons suffering from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. She uses a range of cross-cultural counselling strategies to help her clients assimilate into Canadian society as productively as possible, and to enhance her clients' agency over their personal lives. She believes the socially and spiritually enriching elements of a host culture, combined with one’s unique heritage, together make up the beautiful cultural tapestry of Canada.
Goli uses Lifespan Integration with clients who have had stressful and traumatic life experiences and who have sought to avoid remembering painful events or phases of life. Her approach recognizes that these painful memories may be stored in the body-mind system and may hinder personal growth if ignored. She believes that one can reconnect the adult individual with their traumatic childhood memories in a non-invasive way. Goli helps her clients re-integrate recollections of difficult life experiences into their lives and thus become whole, empowered, and more capable individuals. Goli bases her counselling practice on the belief that the core of human development is both physiological and spiritual. She believes supportive therapy can help awaken the dormant spirit of an individual and guide them through a profound personal transformation with the ultimate goal of promoting their optimal well-being. It is Goli's personal experience of adjusting to a new culture that helps her identify with those who have undergone major life changes and feelings of cultural dislocation. Goli is fluent in English and Persian.
